The temp was pushing 100 and we encountered some stop and go traffic. The tranny was definitely shifting hard. It seemed that the oil had broken down more than normal. That summer I was at a goldwing rally and stopped at the Amsoil booth to talk with a representative. I told him about the hard shifting. He told me that Mobile 1 had reduced the amount of silicates in their synthetics. He told me to try the 10W-40 Metric. He said I would notice a difference. He's the rep, he has to say that. However, I had heard good things about Amsoil from some other riders so decided to give it a try. What an unbelievable difference. Just shifting into 1st (which there is usually a clunk) and driving out of my neighborhood the shifting was smoother than it ever had been. I gave that oil change 5000 miles. Our trip that summer was the remainder of Route 66 from Amarillo to Santa Monica. Going thru Needles it was 106. Never did the shifting get hard or cluncky. I purchased a new goldwing 1800 in 2001 and started running Amsoil at the first oil change. After putting 100,000+ miles on this bike, the clutch was just as sound as the day I rode off from the dealership. No slipping, chatter, sticking or any clutch related issues at all. I sold that bike a couple of years ago and it continues life today as a trike with the same clutch that came from the factory. Now belongs to a coworker and has a tad over 140,000 on it. I now have a 2014 gl1800 using Amsoil as well. I found it to help with less overall engine noise, paticurly the high pitch whine common to the 1800. Shifts were smoother and less clunky. Mileage may have improved a bit but hard to tell with the way I ride. I may be pushing 60 but I still have a very flexible right wrist. Didn't have to ponder about what oil to use. Reviewed by Mark: Switching from Motul 5100 Semi SyntheticThe Motul 5100 Semi Synthetic is a lot more viscous than the AMSOIL. In terms of performance, I have found any oil change be it a car, motorcycle, boat whatever etc always feels like it has a better “Get up and Go” after an oil change. The main reason I switched to the AMSOIL full synthetic is that full synthetic SHOULDN’T break down as quickly as a semi or conventional oil. THIS is where the extra $$$ for the AMSOIL should come into play. That being said it is hard to know when the breakdown period is with any oil, and the trick (in my eye) is to keep on top of regular oil changes in order to prevent breakdown from happening. After 3000kms the oil that I drained out of the CBR yesterday still looked not to bad and smelt okay. I think the bike runs a touch smoother with the AMSOIL because of the viscosity, it’s that much thinner of an oil, and the bike seems to idle lower and run more freely than with the Motul Semi Syn.
